Why Your Boiler Needs Regular Servicing

June 4, 2015 | Boilers/Agas/Rayburns

When it comes to household maintenance, it can be tempting to take the “if it isn’t broke, why fix it?” approach, particularly when it comes to your boiler. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house, why bother servicing it when it’s already working fine?

The answer is actually three-fold. Regular boiler servicing, ideally at least once a year, is crucial to preventing your boiler from becoming dangerous, unreliable and expensive.

Although boiler leaks are rare, they can be extremely dangerous and difficult to detect. If you have an oil-fired boiler, exposure to heating oil in its liquid form or as fumes can have serious health implications, while a faulty gas or oil-fired boiler can lead to deadly carbon monoxide emissions. For this reason, it’s important to get your boiler checked on a regular basis by a fully-qualified OFTEC-registered technician, or in the case of a gas boiler, a Gas Safe engineer who will be aware of the latest safety protocols and procedures.

Aside from personal safety, servicing your boiler has also been shown to greatly improve its efficiency. Unmaintained, boilers become less efficient over time as components become congested with residue from spent fuel. While a more efficient boiler is obviously great news for the environment, it can also provide a major boost to your bank balance as well.

Alongside decreasing your annual fuel costs, a regularly-serviced boiler will be less likely to break down, saving you the inconvenience and expense of repairing it. In those cold winter months, when the boiler is working overtime to heat your home, regular maintenance is crucial to avoiding a frosty night without any heating.

In fact, the best way to avoid a winter breakdown, is to get your boiler serviced during the warmer months, when fuel expenses are lower and the demand for engineers is likely to be reduced. Paying for regular boiler servicing may not be everyone’s idea of an essential expense, but when it can provide you and your family with peace of mind and save you money in the long run, it’s surely a worthwhile investment.
